Filing period ends, CISD cancels election

Published: Thursday, March 14, 2013 3:53 PM CDT
Election filing for area cities ended on March 1, leaving one school board election cancelled. The General Election is slated for May 11.

Celina ISD will be cancelling their school board election this year since only the incumbents, Chuck Hansen and Choc Christopher, filed.

However, three candidates have filed for the Celina City Council. In Place 1, incumbent Larry Berg and George Kendrick have filed. Candidate Chad Anderson is running unopposed for Place 6 on the council.

Larry Berg

Berg has served on the council for about a year and a half. He said he first joined the council because of some influential people he met in the city who recommended that he run. Since being on the council, he has seen the city's growth and the passion of the leaders in Celina.

"Celina is becoming a city on the map, and in the next 10 years growth is going to be phenomenal in terms of businesses moving in and people moving in," he said. "It's going to be an exciting place to live and have a family."

Berg, who has lived in the city for five years, believes that one of the main issues facing Celina, along with water rates and roads, is growth.

"I think the key thing is we want to grow, but we want to keep the small time city feel," Berg said. "Having to balance that is probably the number one thing. You control who and what moves into the city in terms of businesses - you have to be picky and find what fits the city."

Berg is the coach of the local recreation soccer team.

George Kendrick

Kendrick, a Celina resident since 1996, is involved with the Celina Chamber of Commerce, the Cajun Festival Committee and the local rotary club. He is also an officer in the Celina Quarterback Club.

"I've always wanted to run for city council," Kendrick said. "I like to serve the community where I can and look out for the best interest for everybody in the community."

Kendrick decided to run for the council so he can be involved with the future growth of the city. He said Celina is poised to grow exponentially in the next five years, and he wants to see the city be prepared for that growth when it arrives without losing any services that is currently provided to residents.

"We don't want them to suffer from the growth," he said.

Kendrick described himself as a community servant who wants the city, schools and the chamber to work together. He and his wife are youth sponsors with the First Baptist Church, and he has been involved with two Habitat for Humanity houses in Celina.

"I want to help Celina prepare for the future while preserving what makes Celina so special," Kendrick said.

Chad Anderson

Anderson has lived in Celina since 2003. He is involved with the Celina Chamber of Commerce and has served with Frisco Ducks Unlimited and other organizations.

"I have gotten to see the community grow, and we're at a critical time in our community so I want to be involved," Anderson said.

Anderson previously lived in Frisco in 1997 and watched that city grow from a small one to a much larger one. He believes that Celina is probably going to be one of the next fastest-growing cities in Collin County.

"Some of our main issues are transportation," Anderson said. "The infrastructure of the parkways and roads has to be in place before the growth comes. I believe it's better for a community to be prepared than be left behind."

To Anderson, being proactive is important to create a more attractive city when the growth arrives. He said is seeking out involvement with the county commissioner, state representatives, the city manager and current city council to do so.

"I try to be involved in every avenue I can to help Celina be a better place and help get the infrastructure in place," he said.

Prosper

In Prosper, four candidates have filed to run on the Prosper Town Council, and four have filed for the Prosper ISD school board.

On the town council, incumbent Ray Smith is running unopposed for the position of mayor. On Place 1, incumbent Michael Korbuly and Jack Dixon have filed. Incumbent Meigs Miller is running unopposed for Place 4 on the council.

On the school board, incumbent Mark McGuire and Melissa Randle have filed. Incumbents Mary Lou Smith and Jim Bridges have filed for reelection for Place 3 and Place 6, respectively. Both are running unopposed.
