Lake Pointe awarded four Cigna Center of Excellence designations
By Kenny Green, kgreen@starlocalnews.com
Lake Pointe Medical Center continues to provide quality care to its patients. The medical center recently received four Cigna Center of Excellence designations recognizing Lake Pointe for its care in regards to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, general cardiac medical, stroke and vaginal delivery.
"What [Cigna does] is assess performance on a specific area of health care. They determine how well the facility does and how the patients do after they are home," said Brett Lee, Lake Pointe Medical Center chief executive officer. "They basically assess if we treat patients well and do so efficiently."
The Cigna program is designed to meet the consumer demand for tools and information on patient outcomes and cost efficiency. This year, Cigna updated and expanded its designation methodology. Cigna has enhanced quality designations to indicate superior patient outcomes based on treatment effectiveness for 31 different surgical procedures and medical conditions. The patient outcomes data use hospitals' Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Hospital Compare measures, Leapfrog Patient Safety Measures, mortality and complication rates in addition to other evidence-based protocol metrics.
"These designations allow us to go out into the community and say we have some of the best outcomes. We can also say we deliver quality care efficiently. We have evolved our comprehensive cardiac program as part of our strategic growth plan," Lee said. "We have grown our facility from offering routine care to a full-fledged cardiac program. We plan to continue to grow and expand the cardiac program."
As part of its plan for growth, the medical center has invited the city of Rowlett to be involved in its planning process for future expansion. Lee said the invitation was made in an effort to ensure the medical center's expansion was in line with the city's vision for the health and wellness area of the city, as designated by the Realize Rowlett 2020 comprehensive plan.
"We are very excited about the city's revitalization project. We are happy the area around our facility will be a focus area. We are going to be expanding our facility to keep up with the growth in the area. We have invited the city to interact with our master planning process. The hospital will be a centerpiece of the planning," Lee said.
"Wellness is going to be a big focus of ours going forward," Lee said. "We are evolving medical care into a home model with a focus on wellness."
Lee said the planning process is still in the early stages and it will be a few months before the plan is fully developed.
