Southern hospitality

Dr. Cordell Adams read excerpts from his novel, "Light Bread," and told tales of his grandmother, the book's inspiration, on Saturday. His presentation concluded several Black History Month events featured at the Rowlett Public Library.

Adams said he patterned the book's protagonist, Veola Cook, on his grandmother, Leola Cox.

"My grandmother was my favorite babysitter," he said.

Adams is a Dallas ophthalmologist whose educational track includes Southeastern Oklahoma State University, Baylor College of Medicine and the University of California College of Medicine - although he credits a campus around his hometown of Jacksonville, Texas, as well.

"I am equally as proud about my diploma from my grandmother's school of wisdom," he said.

Along with reading passages - occasionally donning cat-eye glasses as he channeled Veola - Adams answered questions from the audience and autographed copies, print and audio, of his book.

"There's been a few people, when we started this book tour, that say, 'Cordell, I am not reading this book unless you come home and read it to me,'" Adams said. "So I had to go to a studio and do the full recording of 'Light Bread' and did just like that.

"I am not going to be responsible for you listening to it and not having a wreck ... with that kind of laughter it may generate," he said.

Clean it up!

Trim those trees and bushes, increase your property value and get a jump on spring cleaning during the annual March Clean-up Campaign. The program allows Rowlett residents to dispose of brush and nonhazardous bulk items free of charge and without limits on the number of visits.

The program runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day in March, including weekends, weather permitting; the site -- at 1409 Castle Drive -- will be closed if it is raining. A driver's license or ID is required as proof of residence. Those with a Wylie address and an East Fork water bill are acceptable.

Hazardous and unacceptable materials include: TVs, computer components or monitors; tires, batteries or automobile parts; any chemicals or liquids such as paint, motor oil or solvents; dirt, rock or concrete; construction, demolition or roofing materials; herbicides, pesticides, fertilizers or pool chemicals; Freon or Freon-containing appliances (such as air conditioners, freezers or refrigerators); and commercial contractor discards.

Bring household chemical products to the Dallas County Home Chemical Collection Center, 11234 Plano Road in Dallas. All residents of Rowlett, including those residing in Rockwall County, may use this facility at no charge. Driver's license and a current utility bill are required as proof of residence.
