Council elections taking shape: At least one seat to be contested
By Kenny Green, kgreen@starlocalnews.com
Rowlett voters will take to the polls on May 11 to decide four seats on the council. The mayor, Place No. 2 representative, Place No. 4 representative and Place No. 6 representative seats are all up for election.
As of Tuesday, only the Place No. 2 seat race had more than one candidate. The seat was recently vacated by Donna Davis, who moved. The seat was already scheduled for election prior to Davis' resignation. Tammy Dana-Bashian, Pamela Bell and Pauline Dedrick have filed and had their petitions to appear on the ballot certified by the city secretary.
Dana-Bashian is a 10-year resident of the city of Rowlett and lists her occupation as a certified public accountant. Dedrick is a 12-year resident of the city and is retired. Bell is a 17-year resident of the city and is a realtor.
The Place No. 6 race currently has incumbent Michael Gallops running unopposed for a second term. Gallops works in marketing.
The race for the Place No. 4 seat features a returning face as Arlan "Brownie" Sherrill is seeking the position for a second time. Sherrill ran against current Place No. 4 representative Ron Miller for the seat during a special election in July 2011. He is a 21-year resident of Rowlett and is employed as a senior programmer. Miller has not filed to seek an additional term.
The deadline to file is March 1. To file to run for a seat on the council, candidates may download the filing form online at www.rowlett.com or may obtain one by visiting the city secretary's office. To be eligible to serve on the council, the city charter states a candidate must be a qualified voter of the city of Rowlett, be a resident of Rowlett for at least one year and should not be in arrears in the payment of any taxes to the city of Rowlett.
For information about filing, contact the city secretary's office at 972-412-6115.
