It's all about safety: Annual bike rodeo scheduled for May

The Rowlett Police Department is always looking for ways to help educate the public and make the city safer. As part of its ongoing efforts, the department annually hosts a bike rodeo to teach children about proper bicycle safety.
"The bike rodeo is an opportunity for us to educate children on bicycle safety. We hold it annually at Rowlett High School," said Sgt. Michael Godfrey, bike rodeo coordinator.
This year the event will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on May 11 in the high school's east parking lot, 4700 N. President George Bush Highway. The event is geared toward children 12 years old and younger. All children must be accompanied by an adult and must bring their own bicycle helmet.
"We have quite a few kids in Rowlett that ride bikes. This really is a way to reach out to the community and to display our bike unit to the community and interact with the kids. We will show the children some general bicycle safety procedures. Each child must wear a helmet and obey all of the signs on the course [we set up]."
In addition to the safety education, the event will offer several vendors selling bike-related items and a radar trailer that allows the children to see just how fast they pedal their bikes.
"The kids love it. They usually will go past the radar trailer several times," Godfrey said.
Godfrey said that through the event the department hopes to reduce the number of bicycle-related incidents throughout the city.
"This event will hopefully teach the children different ways to avoid accidents in the future. The children that come at least receive a little education about the safest ways to operate their bike," Godfrey said.
Godfrey said that one of the places he would recommend people ride their bikes is Community Park.
"A really fantastic place is Community Park. There is lots of open space there and plenty of concrete. The park is also fairly safe since the traffic moves pretty slow," Godfrey said.
