The heart of the matter

Heart disease is a major problem. Every year, about 715,000 Americans have a heart attack. About 600,000 people die from heart disease in the United States each year - that's one out of every four deaths. Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women.

Doctors ask patients to remember a few pointers when it comes to getting to a healthy heart and to not to become overwhelmed when dealing with heart disease: Don't go it alone - the journey is more fun when the patient shares it with friends and family who join in the recovery; and find fun things to do to decrease stress - round up some colleagues for a lunchtime walk, join a singing group or have a healthy dinner with family or friends. Every step brings you closer to a healthier heart.

Arbor Day

The Sunnyvale Garden Club will celebrate Arbor Day on Wednesday, March 20, at 10 a.m. at the new Sunnyvale Elementary School. The event is open to the public.

Every spring, the garden club celebrates Arbor Day by planting a tree and presenting a program on the importance of trees to the environment, community and individuals. For information, call Patricia Gatlin at 972-203-8104 or Sylvia Carter at 214-774-9781.

Final date for SEF auction items

The Sunnyvale Education Foundation is a nonprofit organization that has donated more than $350,000 to our schools through its fundraising events. SEF officials wish to remind residents that the final day for donations to the Boots & Bling silent auction is on March 8. Drop off your donated item, $25 retail value or higher, at any of the three academic buildings.

Friends of the Library ongoing book sale

The Book Nook, operated by the Friends of the Sunnyvale Public Library, is located in the back of the library by the copier. The sale offers adult and children's fiction and nonfiction in hardcover and paperback, as well as CDs, DVDs, videocassettes, magazines and books on audio cassette.

The collection is updated weekly with prices ranging from 10 cents to $2. Proceeds from the book sale are used to support programs and services at the library.

To keep the book sale going, the Friends of the Library depend on donations from the public. Sort through your books, movies, music and magazines, and bring in your unwanted items to the library anytime during library hours. Tax deduction slips are available; just ask.

The Sunnyvale Public Library is located at 402 Tower Place. For information, call 972-226-4491 or visit sunnyvalepubliclibrary.org

Road work ahead

Reconstruction of Jobson Road from Town East to Tripp Road will continue until at least Monday, March 11. This is a complete reconstruction of the roadway. Once Jobson is complete, Town East from Tower Place to Jobson will also be reconstructed. The city apologizes for any inconvenience this may cause.
