Mesquite ISD has put a major focus on recycling over the last several years. The commitment to recycling was recognized at a state level with Rutherford Elementary being named the top recycling school in the state as part of the Recycle Bowl competition.
"The students found out they won last Friday at the Recycle Bowl awards ceremony that we finished first in the state and fourth in the nation," said Holly Grubbs, Rutherford Elementary principal.
Rutherford collected an average of 41.75 pounds of recyclables per student and earned a $1,000 prize for being the Recycle Bowl winner. Rutherford wasn't the only school that did the city proud in the competition, however, as the top seven spots were all Mesquite ISD schools. The competition consisted of more than 200 schools throughout the state.
Rutherford has been actively involved in a recycling program for the past three years, and this is the second year in a row they won the Recycles Bowl state competition.
"It really says that what we are doing is working," Grubbs said. "The recycling program gives the students a sense of purpose and shows them they can make a difference no matter how old they are."
MISD superintendent Linda Henrie and Rutherford fifth-grader Calieb Rankins accepted a special proclamation from Mayor Pro Tem Stan Pickett in honor of the recycling accomplishments.
Keep Texas Beautiful and Keep America Beautiful work to create greener communities. They partnered to develop the Recycle Bowl competition last year with founding sponsor Nestle Waters North America. This year nearly one million students in 1,500 schools in the country competed to be the best recyclers.
The other Mesquite schools that were at the top of the rankings were: Kimball Elementary (second place, 40.21 pounds recycled per student); Pirrung Elementary (third place, 34.65 pounds recycled per student); Shaw Elementary (fourth place, 31.89 pounds recycled per student); Lawrence Elementary (fifth place, 30 pounds recycled per student); Moss Elementary (sixth place, 25.06 pounds recycled per student); and Mesquite Academy (seventh place, 22.68 pounds recycled per student).
