Local teen competes in model contest

Published: Tuesday, March 19, 2013 12:19 PM CDT
There are only a few more days for residents to vote for a local teen wanting to raise awareness for an organization benefitting veterans.

Madison Klatt, a junior at Carroll Senior High School, is competing in the Make Me a Cover Model contest. The grand prize in the contest is a cover story and photo on Klatt's platform - The Veteran's K-9 Corps. Out 3,000 applicants, Klatt was chosen to be in the top 25.

"I'm really excited about my platform because it focuses on providing guide dogs for veterans," Klatt said. "My dad is a marine, and I love animals, so I thought this was a good fit."

In order for Klatt to win the contest, she said residents need to vote for her.

"If everybody just voted for me once, that would be a lot of votes. I would really appreciate anybody and everybody who votes. People should vote especially if they love animals and want to support a veteran," Klatt said. "It's not about me, it's about the fact that I get to do a whole story on my platform. I didn't know the dire need of this organization until a few months ago, and I would like to get the message out."

People may vote for Klatt up to 100 times per person each day. Voting goes through 8 a.m. Monday. Voting is available at www.fourpointsmagazine.com.

In order to better understand the organization she is promoting on her platform, Klatt asked to take a puppy home and help train it to be a guide dog.

"I had to get special permission to use America's VetDogs as a platform, and I really wanted to learn what they do. Within this year that I'll have a puppy, it will wear a guide dog vest and go everywhere with me," Klatt said. "After the year, I'll be allowed to visit the dog and have input about which veteran gets the dog."

Klatt also competed in the contest last year, and her platform was teen suicide.

"I chose that topic because I lost a friend of mine to suicide. Also, in the past year I'd lost a lot of friends to suicide and drugs," Klatt said. "I won the interview portion every time, but I was told that my platform was too heavy. My dad asked if I'd thought about this topic [guide dogs for veterans], and I thought I'd take it on. My dad was in the U.S. Marines for eight and a half years, and he bleeds Marines. He's passionate about any military service."

Going into this contest, Klatt is already a title holder. She is currently Miss NW Tarrant County Texas' Outstanding Teen. In July, she will compete for Miss Texas Outstanding Teen. In order to compete in that contest, she must already be a title holder. Klatt will compete against more than 50 other teenagers. Should she win that title, Klatt will advance to Miss America Teen Outstanding in Florida.

"My mom used to beg me to do pageants, and then all of a sudden I woke up one day and decided I wanted to do one. You learn a lot during these contests, and everyone works so hard to make a difference in people's lives," Klatt said. "It's a lot of work, but it's worth it, and it's invaluable. I've grown so much since I started competing."

In the Miss Texas portion, Klatt will compete in several categories including evening gown, fitness, on stage interview and talent. She plans to play to her strengths and perform a jazz number. Klatt is a member of the Carroll varsity Emerald Belles.

Last year, Klatt competed in seven pageants. Since she began competing, she has participated in 15 pageants.
